Do you need paperwork to scrap a car?
Yes. Most scrap yards will require proof of ownership before they will purchase a car and they may also ask for identification from the seller. You will also need to fill out section 9 of the V5C (vehicle registration certificate) and send it to the DVLA. To inform them that your car is being scrapped.
If you do not have your registration document (logbook) then it is still possible for you to scrap your car. Please follow our guide on Can I scrap my car without a logbook?
How do I notify the DVLA that I’m scrapping my vehicle?
You can tell the DVLA that your car is being scrapped, on their website or by post.
To notify them on their website you will need - the name and address of the scrapyard, your V5C logbook number and your vehicle’s details such as vehicle registration number. It will require an 11-digit reference number which you will find in section four if your logbook was issued after April 2019, or in section nine if it was issued before April 2019.
Fill out the form and the DVLA will now know your car has been scrapped.
To notify them by post you will need the name and address of the scrapyard and the vehicle registration number. The DVLA recommends that you complete section 4 of your V5 logbook, or section 9 if your V5 dates from before April 2019.
The address is:
You should obtain a receipt from the DVLA to confirm that everything has been taken care of for you.
How much do you get for scrapping a car?
The average payment for scrap cars can vary depending on several factors, including the size and weight of your vehicle, the make and model, and the age of the car. Additionally, scrap metal prices are continually fluctuating which scrap yards and treatment facilities must take this into consideration when determining your payment. Generally speaking, the bigger and heavier the car the more scrap metal there is to use and therefore the more you will get for it.
